Does It Really Matter Where I Place My Thermostat?

The thermostat in your home plays a critical role in the comfort level of your home. Where it’s placed can have a big impact on not just how comfortable your home is, but your energy costs. These are the rules to follow for thermostat placement.

Avoid Sunlight

Don’t place your thermostat in an area where it gets direct sunlight. The sunlight will warm the thermostat, which results in inaccurate readings. When this happens, your air conditioner will think your home is warmer than it is and cool it down too much.

Avoid Air Vents

Don’t place your thermostat near a return air vent. The air blowing from the vent will misinform the thermostat about the real temperature elsewhere in your home. It can also cause your air conditioner to short cycle, which shortens its life and dramatically increases electricity bills.

At Guidry's Air Conditioning & Refrigeration, Inc in Raceland, LA, we install and service thermostats. As a Premier Lennox dealer, we have many to choose from.

Place Thermostat Strategically

You shouldn’t put your thermostat in a place like a hall, as that’s an area you just pass through. Instead, place it in a room that gets regularly used. This will make your living areas more comfortable.

Avoid Your Kitchen

Don’t place your thermostat in or near your kitchen. The kitchen is often hotter than the rest of your home because of cooking. This results in inaccurate temperature readings.

Windows or Doors

If you place your thermostat near a door or window, it’s like putting it next to an air vent. Drafts from your doors or windows will cause inaccurate temperature readings. Every time you open the front door, your thermostat will get confused and produce a false temperature reading.
